Company Name:
Scops Coating Technologies
Company Description:
Scops Coating Technologies is a spin-out from Michigan State University and is developing a suite of products based upon IP developed by Dr. Muhammad Rabnawaz in the School of Packaging. This proprietary technology imparts hydrophobic (water repelling) and oleophobic (oil repelling) characteristics to commonly cured coatings including polyurethane, polyaspartic, and epoxies. Our current formulation is being developed as a nonfluorinated, optically clear additive in polyurethanes and current support comes from an NSF Phase I SBIR award. Current work includes the development of this additive for glass and tile substrates and requires optimization of adhesion, scratch resistance, and UV resistance.
Scops plans to apply for an NSF Phase II award in order to fully commercialize this product at scale and in cooperation with an industry partner. This position is a senior technical role and has the potential to expand to greater responsibilities and company ownership upon successful completion of SBIR Technical objectives and commercialization activities. Additionally, related products such as anti-dirt, and paper coatings may be longer term products to be developed.
The early stage nature of this company allows such a researcher to make a significant long term impact, and the SBIR award is an indication of the technical merits and significance of the work as determined by the National Science Foundation.
