    The European Coatings Show (ECS) plus Adhesives, Sealants, Construction Chemicals is the leading exhibition for the international coating and paint industry and will be held April 4-6 in Nuremberg, Germany. Widely acknowledged as the largest coatings show in the world, the event draws exhibitors and attendees from all over the world as it offers a unique platform for sharing new ideas, technologies and opportunites for meeting both existing and potential customers.

    According to Robert Ruckle, global marketing and sales manager at Siltech, the ECS is a great show to exhibit at because customers proactively set up meetings to update projects and to explore new ideas. “We plan on taking leads, talking to a lot of people and maybe eat some white asparagus later in the day,” said Ruckle.

    Shamrock Technologies plans on exhibiting some of its new products and their benefits, with a focus on its commitment to the European market. “We have local manufacturing, as well as, technical development capabilities to better service our European Customers,” noted Choo. “We are highlighting new developments in water wet table products, water-based dispersions and surface effect additives that include look, matting and controlled feel.”

    Showcasing the Latest Innovations
    The European Coatings Show will offer manufacturers of paints and coatings, adhesives, sealants, printing inks and constructions chemicals, suppliers of raw materials and industrial processors a unique platform to meet industry experts and learn about the latest technologies being offered for the paint and coating industry.

    The ECS will take up seven exhibition halls and will showcase the latest developments for the manufacture of paints and coatings. According to show organizers, international trade visitors can look forward to a comprehensive overview of the market for raw materials and services as well as testing, measuring, laboratory and production technology. The event will also welcome a large number of international exhibitors, with companies from outside Germany accounting for more than half of the exhibitors currently registered.

    BASF will have a significant presence at the show. Here is list of some the key products being highlighted at the BASF stand:

    Environmentally compatible corrosion protection for industrial metal coatings
    The new water-based Acronal PRO 7600 acrylic dispersion provides light to medium corrosion protection (categories C2 to C3) for industrial metal coatings. The binder offers an environmentally compatible drop-in solution that does not contain APEO and replaces Acronal PRO 760, the current market standard. Acronal PRO 7600 can be used for all current applications such as airless, brush, roll or dip.
     
    Excellent rheology and stabilization of flowable mortars
    Self-flowing mortars help to save time and money at building sites. The powdery Melflux superplasticizers and stabilizers from the Starvis range of BASF that are used for floor screeds and self-leveling underlayments exhibit very good flow behavior and perfectly stabilize mineral particles. Starvis prevents unwanted effects such as sedimentation or bleeding. Starvis-based mortar products are particularly robust when it comes to water and raw material fluctuations: They greatly improve the quality of floor constructions and help to avoid complaints at construction sites. Since Starvis products can be combined with Melflux superplasticizers, they enable a rheology profile that is individually geared towards customer requirements. 
     
    Environmentally compatible, high-performance dispersion for interior paints
    With the Acronal 6292 dispersion, paint manufacturers are enabled to produce sophisticated interior paints with highest wet scrub resistance at competitive prices. The water-based styrene-acrylate binder is a high-quality alternative to the conventional technologies and facilitates the formulation of environmentally compatible interior paints: Acronal 6292 is a low-odor product that contains neither ammonia nor coalescents.
     
    Highly efficient defoamer for water-based systems
    Foam formation is a common problem occurring during production and processing of paints and coatings. To avoid such problems, BASF has added a new defoamer to its range of formulation additives that is based on organo-modified polysiloxanes – FoamStar SI 2240. Apart from its strong defoaming effect, FoamStar SI 2240 shows broad compatibility with different binder systems and excellent long-term stability and efficiency. FoamStar SI 2240 is registered worldwide and can, among other applications, be used in water-based architectural coatings, industrial coatings and paints as well as in pigment concentrates. In addition, FoamStar SI 2240 complies with specific FDA and EU requirements for food contact and is therefore suited for printing and packaging applications.
     
    Solutions for fast growing resilient flooring segment
    BASF offers the perfect fit for flooring adhesives as well as coating raw materials for resilient flooring including, linoleum, PVC sheet and luxury vinyl tile floorings.
    The new high-quality and environmentally compatible dispersion Acronal 5325 meets all today’s requirements for flooring adhesive applications. This versatile product is recommended for a broad range of textile, linoleum, PVC sheet and luxury vinyl tile floorings. Acronal 5325, which is based on an environmentally compatible technology, contains neither APEO nor formaldehyde, and, due to bio-based raw materials,has a 40% reduced carbon footprint as compared with conventional products. It provides high cohesion and allows long open times, especially in resin-free formulations. Acronal 5325 can be used as a co-binder to help to boost performance.
    For resilient flooring coatings, BASF has launched new UV curable resins. Laromer  PE 9126 offers an outstanding combination of adhesion & flexibility with highest chemical resistance. Laromer UA 9089, an 

    The European Coatings Show is also a significant event for Sun Chemical and the company hopes to demonstrate how its full range of tailor-made resins and pigments can help customers and prospective customers achieve excellent results with any coatings application. “We look forward to interacting face-to-face with a much broader global customer base and learning what needs and requirements they are looking for with both their resins and pigments,” added Venturini.

    During the ECS, Sun Chemical will highlight its Benda-Lutz COMPAL WS VOC-free, highly concentrated aluminum preparations for coatings and inks. This new technology enables customers to use the same product for waterborne, UV and high solids coating chemistries by providing broad compatibility that is optimized for long-term gassing stability in aqueous environments. Additionally, each COMPAL WS preparation is delivered in an easily dispersible granular form for safe and easy handling, improved shelf stability, and various transportation advantages.

    Sun Chemical’s newest Azo yellow pigment, Sunbrite Yellow 74, for architectural coatings was developed specifically for decorative coatings producers and the needs of machine colorants. It is easier to disperse than previous grades and delivers 15 to 20 percent more tint strength than comparable products. It has been quickly adopted because of its color point for existing and new VOC-free colorant systems.

    Sun Chemical’s new SunMICA Deep Black Pearlescent black pearl pigment for powder coatings and plastics offers exceptional luster, sparkle and jetness compared to traditional commercially available black pearlescent pigments. Just as opaque as other pearlescent pigments, by increasing the load of Sun Chemical’s black pearl pigments, the shade darkens and the sparkle effect can become more prominent.

    A leader in Perylene chemistry, Sun Chemical’s new yellow shade Perrindo Red 179 features the benchmark transparency that is vital to producing modern, high chromatic metallic red finishes. One of the most yellow pigment red 179 shades on the market, Perrindo Red 179 offers excellent light and weather fastness, rigorous process and quality control, compatibility in water- and solvent-borne systems, and is easy to disperse. 

    For premium mirror-like coatings, Benda-Lutz SPLENDAL offers four unique, microscopically-thin aluminum platelet suspensions produced via physical vapor deposition. These vacuum metallized pigments range from a brilliant clean “white” to intense dark chrome reflections and are available in multiple solvents for almost every coating application. The SPLENDAL pigment range finds widespread application for premium consumer electronics, automotive interiors, and automotive wheels.

    SPLENDAL vacuum metalized flakes can be formulated with DIC’s acrylic resins to produce luxurious finishes for plastics which meet the most demanding chemical resistance specifications for automotive interiors. A best-in-class solventborne acrylic polyol, DIC Acrylic WPU-349 exhibits outstanding adhesion to ABS and polycarbonate, and provides automotive interior coatings with superior DEET and sunscreen resistance.

    With difunctional, trifunctional and tetrafunctional varieties, EPICLON epoxy resins impart high-performance composites with unmatched heat and water resistance, toughness and excellent adhesion. DIC’s EPICLON epoxy resins are ideal for major applications in the aerospace, automotive, electronics, tooling and adhesives industries.

    Micro Powders’ exhibition will highlight several new products based on the company’s innovative composite wax technology.  “We combine ECS with a major sales meeting where we introduce our new products, discuss new applications and lab studies, and promote new selling tools to enhance our ability to sell micronized waxes into the coatings market,” said Czarneck.

    Micro Powders’ 2017 launches include PropylTex HD, a line of composite texture waxes designed for optimum stability in water based systems.  The company will also be promoting its new Polyfluo 900 for maximum burnish resistance, and PropylMatte 31SA for gloss reduction with surface lubricity.

    Phoseon Technology will be located in Hall 5 / Stand 5-140, and will be demonstrating why Phoseon LED technology is a perfect fit for coating applications due to the compact size, ease of integration, and high intensity output achieved through optimized LED thermal management. “Users of Phoseon LED curing systems can process a variety of materials, including thin and heat-sensitive substrates, at maximum production speeds with low-input power,” said Faucher. “Among other products, Phoseon will display its latest FireJet FJ100 and FireLine FL400 UV LED units as well including its TargetCure and WhisperCool technologies.”

    Phoseon’s focus at the show will be UV LED curing solutions. “UV LED curing solutions are being utilized in the coating industry because they offer lower operating costs, enhanced system capabilities due to being a solid-state device, and environmental benefits of safer workplace environment and no hazardous materials,” added Faucher. “UV LED technology drastically reduces energy consumption and significantly reduces work-piece surface temperature. Machines can be made more compact due to small form factor; speed can be increased due to consistent UV output; and the diffuse nature of UV LED light can be used to more effectively cure shaped surfaces which previously required multiple lamps at various angles. UV curable coating applications include: wood and vinyl, automotive, musical instruments, fixtures and many others.”

    Together with its partners and distributors worldwide, Keim Additec works with its customers to recommend the perfect additive selection from its portfolio. “The ECS gives us the freedom to learn more about their applications or current challenges and to inform the global coatings industry about our new developments.
      
    Some of the products on display by  Keim Additec Surface GmbH include:
    New ULTRALUBE MDD-48 fills the gap between ULTRALUBE MD-micro dispersion specialties and classical ULTRALUBE D-dispersions. This material is providing an optimized balance between rub resistance and gloss level in different kinds of coating applications at a high level of stability in the formulation.
     
    Silcona GmbH & Co. KG:  
    SILCO OZ 100: APE and solvent-free additive with 75% active content to:
    Extended open time, improved gloss and pigment wetting, usable in each step of the paint formulation
    SILCO WET D-522
    Is a siloxane-free and low foaming wetting agent for waterborne systems, especially recommended to enhance cratering / cissing resistance in architectural paints and wood coatings.
    SILCO WET C-650
    Low molecular weight methyl polysiloxane for solventborne systems, especially recommended to optimize leveling and enhance floating resistance in solvent based coatings systems.

    Visitors to Clariant’s booth 7-123 will see the company’s unified focus on addressing the key coatings’ trends and market needs, where sustainability is clearly a common feature.

    “Economics are important and the industry is looking for cost reduction through energy and raw material savings,” said Grosskopf. “It is moving towards more environmentally-compatible coatings formulations to respond to increasing legal requirements and consumer awareness. It has a key role in steering consumer color taste and application design, and wants to deliver a new level of safety, functionality and performance through innovative coatings. And it needs the innovations to achieve this.”

    “At ECS, we will be demonstrating new, cutting-edge developments that fill specific gaps in efficiency, in a coating’s ability to fulfil both protective and aesthetic functions, that support the consumer and manufacturer shift to greater convenience and multifunctionality, and that address the growing influence of health and well-being on ingredient choices,” Grosskopf added.

    Clariant will be launching a number of new individual products and range extensions, among which will be products awarded with its EcoTain label in recognition of their excellent sustainability profile.

    Set to make their debut at ECS: the first hazard label-free, VOC/SVOC-free and renewable-based neutralizing agent for waterborne paints and coatings; new stabilizers that will pioneer easy-application for biocide-free mineral paints; fire protection ingredients for intumescent coatings that also prolong shelf life; an additive to improve properties of electrostatic coatings; a synergistic UV absorber/light stabilizer for solvent- and water-based coatings; and a new family of waxes based on renewable resources.

    “On the coloration side, we will unveil our range of nine super-transparent, ready-to-use,  pigment preparations,” said Grosskopf. “They come with a color intensity similar to dyes while having very fastness properties, no migration or bleeding and offer the entire color circle to solvent-based paint systems. Plus, a complete color range of high-performance, easy to use colorants for UV cured coatings to support the trend for colored UV systems, will be launched.We will also give visitors the first opportunity to preview the automotive colors of the future as we launch our Automotive Styling Shades 2019 Trendbook at the show.”


    Elementis Specialties will be presenting new non-ionic associative thickeners which are extremely efficient for high shear rate viscosity build. The company is also showcasing new organic thixotrope rheological additives which provide high efficiency and production cycle reductions. 

    Troy will be featuring its line of advanced Mergal and Nuosept MIT-free wet-state preservatives for European manufacturers. New Mergal® ZBIT will be presented, along with advanced Mergal 712, 758, & 723K, plus Nuosept BIC. These MIT-free preservatives from Troy provide fast-acting, long-lasting broad-spectrum protection. With full regulatory compliance, formaldehyde-free chemistry, excellent proven performance against microbial contamination, and low cost-in-use, Troy’s MIT-free wet-state preservatives offer excellent solutions to the challenges European manufacturers face.

    Troy will also be featuring its advanced dry-film preservatives for Europe, including new, advanced Polyphase 864CR, which offers highly effective, long-term performance against fungi and algae, with enhanced resistance to leaching. Additional broad-spectrum preservatives include high-performance Polyphase 663 as well as Polyphase 899, which provides enhanced protection against algae, making the product ideal for stucco and other cementitious coatings. Troy will also be presenting Troysan PP43, which is a full-spectrum fungicide suited for use in both interior and exterior coatings, as well as paper coatings.

    The Troy exhibit at ECS will showcase the company’s full portfolio of performance additives as well as metal carboxylates. Featured are Troy’s new, advanced multifunctional dispersants, Troysperse ZWD1 & ZWD3, which provide excellent color development and fast dispersion time, as well as performance at low use levels. Additionally, Troythix rheology modifiers will be shown, including the Troythix 150-series, which offers enhanced flow & leveling, pigment suspension, and sag resistance.

Our wide range of untreated and hydrophobically treated CAB-O-SIL fumed silicas, available as both powders and pre-dispersed in our easy-to-process CAB-O-SPERSE products, allow our customers to select the product that provides the precise level of rheology control, anti-sag, anti-settlement, anti-corrosion and mechanical property improvement required in their coatings across all major resin chemistries and end applications.”

    Arkema will present its comprehensive product offering from all of its businesses serving the paint and coatings industry, including Coating Resins, Coatex rheology modifiers, Sartomer, and the Technical Polymers business which includes Kynar PVDF resins, and Rilsan and Orgasol polyamides. Arkema will focus on products and technologies for housing; construction; automotive; packaging; and protective and marine coatings.

    Siltech will be highlighting its latest product, Silmer OHT line, a fluoro-free product for stain release and anti-graffiti applications.  “We also have a blocked isocyanate functional silicone for reacting into PU resins,” added Ruckle.
