    CHINACOAT2018 Offers Opportunities to Learn About Future of the Industry

    This annual three-day event will be held Dec. 4-6 in Guangzhou

    Kerry Pianoforte, Editor 11.30.18
    CHINACOAT2018 (the 23rd edition of the China International Exhibition for Coatings, Printing Inks and Adhesives) will be held Dec. 4-6 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex (Area A), in Guangzhou, China.  Since 1996, the show has been an annual meeting place for the industry to gather and exchange ideas and alternates its venue city annually between Guangzhou and Shanghai.

    As the show has grown, CHINACOAT2018 will move to Halls 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, 1.2, 2.2, 3.2 and 4.2, Area A of the venue.

    The planned total gross exhibition area will be more than 80,000 square meters.  Comprising five exhibit zones – Powder Coatings Technology, UV/EB Technology & Products, International Machinery, Instrument & Services, China Machinery, Instrument & Services and China & International Raw Materials – exhibitors will gain opportunities to present their technologies and products to domestic and international visitors in one show within three days.

    According to the show’s organizers Sinostar, CHINACOAT has been the leading coatings show since 1996.  Exhibiting companies can expect to meet and have close engagement with a lot of target visitors worldwide. The 2017 Shanghai show closed with a total of 34,425 trade visitors from 88 countries/regions and 1,210 exhibitors from 34 countries/regions.  Visitors came from many well-known coatings companies, such as 3Trees, Sherwin-Williams, Asia Paint, Huahui Painting, Carpoly Chemical, Kansai Paint, Toyo Ink, Huarun, Nippon Paint, Axalta Coating, Beckers, Bauhinia Paints, PPG, Jotun, BASF, AkzoNobel, Maydos, Taiho and Shanghai Paint.

    Sinostar reported that Asian economies have maintained steady growth.  Key markets include China, Japan, India, and South Korea.  Other emerging countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia are also experiencing growth, increasing middle-class population and rising construction activities.  In addition, Asia’s per capita coatings consumption is still far behind the North American and European markets (Asia’s per capita demand for coatings is 32 percent that of the North American market), indicating the Asian market still has room for a substantial increase.  According to Sinostar, for foreign exhibitors eying entry or greater market access into China and other Asian markets, CHINACOAT is the strategic springboard to build trading relationships.

    CHINACOAT will also include the following educational programs: CHINACOAT 16th Conference: “Green Coatings – Advanced Technologies and New Materials,” technical seminars and two Technical Workshops.

    According to conference chair, Prof. Jamil Baghdachi of Eastern Michigan University, environmentally friendly coatings continue to be a hot topic of discussion globally.

    However, the application of greener coating technologies as well as commercialization has been challenging. This year the CHINACOAT Conference, as a concurrent event of CHINACOAT2018’s Technical Program, will be held December 3-4 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Guangzhou. The Conference theme is “Green Coatings -

    Advanced Technology & New Materials,” which concentrates on advanced, innovative technologies and newly developed materials for Green Coatings.

    The Conference features one Chairman’s open address and 13 technical papers related to various aspects, including global trends and technologies, waterborne coatings, powder coatings, bio-based materials, self-healing polymers, superamphiphobic coatings, anti-bacterial dispersions and additives.

    In addition, the Conference is intended to act as a platform for academicians, researchers, formulators, and engineers to share their thoughts and ideas on trends in coating technologies and materials.

    Session I of the conference will be comprised of the following presentations: Opening Speech – “Global Trends in Green Coatings, Advanced Technology and New Materials,” presented by Prof. Jamil Baghdachi of Eastern Michigan University; Keynote Paper – “Ultra-low Temperature Curable Powder Coatings for Wood: VOC-free Technology Below the Boiling Point of Water,” presented by Prof. Rolf Van Benthem, Corporate Science Fellow DSM, The Netherlands; Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands;  “A Facial Approach to Prepare Superamphiphobic Coatings and Its Applications,” by Prof. Liang Shen of Jiangxi Science & Technology Normal University, Nanchang, China; “High Performance Polymer Powders for Coatings,” by Dr. Frank Schubert, manager new business development powders at Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH, Germany; “Low Temperatures Curing Powder Coatings System for New Applications and Robust Process Efficiency,” by Rong Xiong, TS&D manager, Allnex, Germany.

    Session II of the conference will offer the following presentations: “Indispensable Surface Additives Effect VS Chemistry,” by Dr. Majdi Al-Masri, head of Research Surface, BYK Chemie GmbH, Germany and Leiping Fan, head of R&D TPT & Surface TG, BYK (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., China; “Novel Light Stabilizer Enhances the UV-Filtering Ability of Waterborne UV-Curable Coatings without Sacrifice Curing Speed,” presented by Yang Yung-Chi, technical manager at Everlight Chemical Industrial Corp., Taipei, Taiwan; “Classical and New Application Fields for PU Modified Alkyd Emulsions,” presented by Caroline Matthiesen, manager at Worlée-Chemie GmbH, Germany and “Development of Low VOC 2K Waterborne PU Anti-graffiti Coatings,” presented by Maggie Yu, lab manager at Vencorex (Shanghai), China.

    Session III, which will begin on December 4th will feature a Keynote Paper – “Underwater Self-Healing Polymer,” presented by Prof. Ming Qiu Zhang of the Materials Science Institute of Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University, Guangzhou; “Synthesis and Characterization of Anti-smudge and Long-lasting Anti-bacterial Cationic Polyurethane Dispersion,” by Prof. Glenn Hu of South China University of Technology, Guangzhou; “Biobased Alkyd Emulsion with Outstanding Performances for Architectural and Industrial Coatings,” presented by Dr. Olivier Moreillon, R&D Director Ecoat, France; “Next Generation of Thickeners in Industrial Coatings & Construction Systems,” presented by Carlos Feito Fraile, technical director at Elementis GmbH, Germany and “The Effect of Rainfall on Waterborne UV Stabilizers,” presented by Dr. Chris Chiu of Chitec Technology Co., Ltd., Taipei, Taiwan.

    To provide opportunities for training and learning for industry professionals, Technical Workshops will also be held concurrently with the exhibition in meeting rooms located inside the conference hall The Workshops will be delivered in a highly interactive manner, where there will be opportunities for delegates to discuss technical problems with the tutors face-to-face.

    The workshops are:

    • Workshop 1: Design & Formulation for Low VOC, High-Performance Waterborne Metal Protective Coatings
    Tutor: Dr. Cai Yu, TS & D scientist, Dow Coating Materials, Dow Chemical Company;

    • Workshop 2: Designing Optimal Formulations for Waterborne Polymers & Coatings
    Tutor: Prof. Jamil Baghdachi, a professor at Eastern Michigan University, professor of Polymers and Coatings and guest professor at the Shanghai University of Engineering Science;

    • Workshop 3: Sustainability – Shifting Coatings & Ink Technology Paradigm
    Tutor: Prof. Long Lin, professor of Color and Polymer Science, director of DP Centre of Industrial Collaboration & head of the department of Color Science, University of Leeds, UK.
