Coatings World recently spoke with Rust-Oleum Brand Manager Brian Joyce and Restoration Business Manager Norm Sherwood, who have some post-flood cleaning and mold removal and restoration tips using Moldex and EnviroShield.
Brian Joyce has been with Moldex – a brand recently included in the Rust-Oleum family – for more than 10 years. Sherwood joined Rust-Oleum several months ago but boasts 25 years of experience in the coatings and restoration industry.
CW: What tips do you have for post-flood cleaning?
Joyce and Sherwood:
Joyce and Sherwood: "Moldex was developed specifically to address mold problems and disaster/flood-related issues. Our goal was to create a professional grade product that could be used by DIY consumers as an alternative to bleach and other ineffective and non-EPA Registered treatments."
CW: What are the benefits of Moldex?
Joyce and Sherwood: "There are many, but our primary focus is on the non-bleach, EPA registered claims and hospital grade disinfecting aspects of this product. It’s a five-in-one product that has registered claims as a disinfectant, deodorizer, fungicide, mildewstat, and cleaner. It's tough to get all of those claims in one product and Moldex has achieved that."
CW: Without giving away any secrets, how does it kill mold and mildew?
Joyce and Sherwood: "The active ingredients in Moldex are designed to destroy the roots of the mold and mildew growth and kill odor-causing bacteria."
CW: Where can Moldex be purchased?
Joyce and Sherwood: Moldex products are available at Do-it-Best, Ace Hardware, True Value along with participating Orgill and ALLPRO dealers.
CW: In regards to restoration, how did EnviroShield become a top brand?
Joyce and Sherwood: "Developed in 1996, EnviroShield was first to market in the restoration and flood recovery market. The technology in EnviroShield has more than 15 years of proven field applications in some of the harshest conditions possible. EnviroShield is a trusted brand name when it comes to fire, flood and masonry restoration."
CW: What are its benefits? Applications?
Joyce and Sherwood: "EnviroShield acts as a mold and mildew prevention coating and passes ASTM 5590 and 3273 for the resistance of growth on the surface of the coating film. EnviroShield is designed to be applied at high square foot performance (up to 1,200 square feet per gallon) and is typically less expensive than alternative coatings. It is a water-based product that is soap and water cleanup. One coat application is all that is needed and come in a clear and white formulation."
CW: Are there any new products or product lines on the horizon?
Joyce and Sherwood: "Yes, we are always launching new items under the EnviroShield and Moldex Brand to stay ahead of the competition and industry."

CW: What tips do you have for post-flood cleaning?
Joyce and Sherwood:
- "Allow the water to recede;
- Discard as much as possible that has been affected;
- Dry and treat remaining surfaces with an EPA registered disinfectant/fungicide that is labeled for mold;
- Treat cleaned areas with an antimicrobial coating – EnviroShield – to prevent future growth."
