HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams unveiled its 2019 Color Collections of the Year and Color of the Year in a joint event with Valspar, which celebrated a decade of selecting trending shades for the upcoming year, at MILK Studios in Manhattan.
Three color collections were selected from the HGTV Home line, which is available exclusively at Lowe’s.
“The 2019 Color Collections of the Year encourage consumers to travel down a path of self-discovery through coordinated palettes that easily help them bring their color vision to life,” said Ashley Banbury, senior color designer at HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams.
“It really helps the customer have that designer style in their home,” she told Coatings World. “They can take a paint color and be inspired. Anything can be mixed and matched together.”
Reflecting Pool was chosen as the color of the year.
“Reflecting Pool is incredibly versatile and can be combined with any of the trending Color Collections,” Banbury said. “It can be soft and calming when mixed with natural hues, but energizing and fun when combined with the vivid and bold shades.”
Banbury told Coatings World that Reflecting Pool can “take on many personalities.”
“I can combine it with the softness of Everyday Balance with natural hues and it really had its own personality,” she said. “When I combined it with Mystic Light – the fun, bold and the shadows – it had this great contrast.

Rather than limit inspiration to just one color, the Valspar brand chooses to curate 12.
“The Valspar Colors of the Year are bolder takes on basic colors to provide color-curious consumers the opportunity to create change within their homes in an easy, fun and attainable way. We believe changing your outlook can be as easy as changing the paint on your walls,” said Sue Kim, Valspar senior color designer at Sherwin-Williams Consumer Brands Group. “Orange Slice, for instance, evokes a sense of playfulness, while Twilight Mist brings an aura of mystery.”
Kim told Coatings World that there has been “great collaboration” in choosing the colors since Sherwin-Williams acquired Valspar.
“We have a lot stronger color team when we look at our global and national perspectives,” she said.
