Cortec Corporation has introduced Boiler Lizard—designed for dry lay-up of boilers that provides corrosion protection to ferrous metals and aluminum in enclosed spaces. Patent pending Boiler Lizard contains vapor phase corrosion inhibitor powder in a polyvinylalcohol (PVA) water-soluble bag. The powder formulation is free of phosphates, heavy metals, nitrites and free amines. VpCI molecules vaporize and adsorb on all metal surfaces, reaching all recessed areas and interior cavities, enabling protection of inaccessible and recessed surfaces. The product is biodegradable, non-toxic and non-irritating said the company.
Boiler Lizard provides up to 12-months protection in the vapor phase (void), liquid phase and the interface during dry lay-up period. It requires little or no surface preparation for routine shutdown maintenance. The VpCI layer does not need to be removed prior to equipment start-up and the product eliminates the need for other forms of protection including nitrogen blankets, silica gel and hydrazine said the company. Boiler Lizard protects up to 3,786 liters system capacity per bag.
Due to its environmentally safe features, Boiler Lizard has been used in “green” initiative projects aimed to evaluate environmental impact of products and processes. One of these initiators was Wright Patterson Air Force Base, whose team decided to change all possible applications to “green” systems. Chemicals that had been used in their boilers and cooling systems were harsh and potentially damaging and they decided to use Cortec’s Boiler Lizard and Cooling Loop Gator in the cooling and heating systems seasonally.
Boiler Lizard conforms to military specification MIL-I-22110C, NACE Standard TM0208-2008 and is RoHS compliant.
