recently launched Ultra One, Ultra Lite and Primax Excel, which allow engineered wood to be protectively coated in powder – and for the first time, these products can be applied to natural wood too.
This process has not been possible before on natural wood due to the fact that the temperatures required to use powder coatings would damage the material.
This breakthrough gives designers a new way of considering wood as a viable building material and brings a durable, more environmentally friendly product to the forefront of forward-looking design.
Copenhagen-based designer Troels Flensted has used Ultra One on one of his latest designs, which was exhibited at the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition in Thorvaldsen Museum, Copenhagen, in 2018.
Flensted wanted to elevate his chosen material of MDF and have the design monochromatic, textured and with differing dimensions of reflection and shading – all of which the powder coating helped make possible.
“Our new range of powder coatings for engineered and natural wood is versatile and innovative," said Salah El Malla, Jotun’s global marketing manager, Appliances and Furniture. “They offer flexibility to designers - allowing them to use wood and MDF like never before. Additionally, Jotun’s products also offer efficiency to manufacturers by increasing their output.
“The range opens up new opportunities and another market for Jotun, expanding our offering to a new area of design and protection, as well as adding to the scope of what designers and furniture manufacturer can achieve," El Malla continued. "The revolutionary nature of this new technology and its benefits are at the forefront of the market and we look forward to seeing it being used widely as a method of protecting and beautifying both natural and engineered wood.”
