The pandemic had a significant impact on the German market for paint and coatings. According to CHEM Research GmbH, a long-standing partner of the Association of the German Paint and Printing Ink Industry (VdL), the German market for coatings and paints recorded a 4.5% fall in sales in Q1 2021.
Decorative paints decreased by 6% in volume terms, while industrial coatings lost 2.5%. Decorative paints (including plasters and putties) suffered losses in the DIY segment due to the retail outlet lockdown, while the professional/trade segment experienced slight growth.
In the industrial coating sector, the largest volume segment "General Industry," including house appliances, machinery and general metal finishing showed signs of recovery.
Modest growth in industrial wood finishing was offset by weak furniture production, thus leading to a decline in the wood/furniture coating segment.
Automotive OEM, vehicle refinishing and protective and marine applications showed the largest volume drops.
