PPG completed a COLORFUL COMMUNITIES project in South Africa which helped revitalize the Kungwini Children’s Home, part of the Kungwini Welfare Organization. The Colorful Communities program provides PPG volunteers and products, as well as financial contributions, to bring color and vitality to communities where the company operates around the world, such as in Pretoria East, where a Prominent Paints Paint Centre is located.
The project brought together more than 60 PPG volunteers, who spent four days refreshing the interior and exterior of the children’s home. In total, PPG provided approximately $25,000 to assist with the project, including 2,000L of paint, including Evolve, Prominent Paints Premium range and Prominent Paints Select range. New bed linens, curtains, outdoor furniture, gym equipment and umbrellas for visitors were also donated.
The paint colors selected for the communal areas included warm, inviting neutral colors that provide a blank canvas and calming retreat for tenants. In addition, the children were able to select their favorite paint colors for their bedrooms.
The Kungwini Welfare Organization provides a variety of services to the Pretoria East community. The organization manages the Paul Jungnickel Home for disabled adults, the Kungwini Children's Home, the Kungwini Early Learning Centers, as well as community development projects and social work services. The Colorful Communities project will impact more than 160 disabled residents cared for by the organization.
“In South Africa the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing annually and the importance of CSI projects such as this one cannot be underestimated when it comes to improving the lives of the poor in this country,” said Paul-Alban Riché, managing director, Prominent Paints Center and PPG regional business director, Southern and Eastern Africa. “As corporate citizens, we can become agents of change, but for meaningful change to occur, collaboration and engagement is required for optimal impact. This is exactly what’s transpired with this project. By working together with multiple partners our impact has been magnified and for us that’s a great result.”
The Colorful Communities program is PPG’s signature initiative for community engagement efforts, with the aim to protect and beautify the neighborhoods where PPG operates around the world. The program increases PPG’s commitment to invest in communities and supports projects that transform community assets, providing PPG volunteers and donated PPG products. In 2015 and 2016 combined, PPG completed nearly 60 Colorful Communities projects, and it expects to complete about 75 more this year.
