Kathryn Shaffer, PPG senior development chemist, industrial coatings, will present a paper titled “Advances in Edge Protection for Powder Coatings” at the 2019 CoatingsTech Conference in Cleveland on April 8, PPG announced.
Shaffer’s paper will illustrate how PPG researchers formulated the industry’s first one-coat, direct-to-metal powder coating, resulting in a new benchmark for corrosion protection of sharp edges created during metal fabrication.
In addition to detailing the multi-faceted approach used to create the coating, Shaffer will present test results from lab work and field trials to demonstrate how the technology performs three functions that had never before been achieved together in a product of this type. The functions are:

In addition to detailing the multi-faceted approach used to create the coating, Shaffer will present test results from lab work and field trials to demonstrate how the technology performs three functions that had never before been achieved together in a product of this type. The functions are:
- Applying a consistent, uniform film build on the laser-cut edges of metal parts using electrostatic spray equipment;
- Maintaining a uniform film build on laser-cut edges throughout the baking/curing process;
- Providing exceptional levels of corrosion protection through rigorous salt spray testing and field trials.
